SR&ED claims are paid on the credit you receive. Grant applications start with a retainer that is credited back against the fee. Referral partners work with us under a short written agreement. Every fee is confirmed in writing before any work starts.
Grantwork is paid a percentage of the credit you actually receive. Nothing is payable up front, and nothing is payable while the claim is with the CRA. If the credit is reduced, the fee is reduced with it. If nothing is recovered, there is no fee.
The rate is quoted on your file, in writing, at the first call. It reflects the number of projects, the state of your records and the provinces involved, and it stays the same for as long as you are a client. One rate covers the whole claim: the technical interviews, the narratives, the financial schedules, filing with your accountant, and answering the CRA's questions if the claim is reviewed.
Grant applications, such as IRAP, CanExport, the Global Innovation Clusters and hiring programs, are charged as a percentage of the funding awarded. A retainer is invoiced when the work starts and is credited back against the fee once the grant is approved, so it is not an extra cost on top. Both the retainer and the rate are quoted in writing before any work begins.
Grants are quoted separately from the SR&ED rate, never bundled into one number, and the two are checked against each other first: some grants reduce an SR&ED claim by more than they pay, and we tell you that before recommending one.
Accountants, bookkeepers, lawyers and business advisers often meet companies doing eligible work before we do. If that is you, we are glad to work alongside you.
The arrangement is simple. You introduce the company, we screen it and prepare the claim or the application, and your client stays your client. You can be as involved as you like, from a single introduction to sitting in on the technical calls. Referral terms are set out in a short written agreement before the first file, so there is nothing to work out afterwards.
Is the rate negotiable? The rate follows the work. If a quote looks high, the useful conversation is about which factors put it there. Some of them, such as the state of your records, can be improved before the year ends.
Is there a minimum? Yes, per claim year, and you are told what it is at the first call. If your claim is likely to fall under it, you hear that at the same call, along with whether filing is worth doing this year.
Does the rate apply to the provincial credit too? Yes. Federal and provincial credits are prepared as one claim, and the rate applies to the total you receive. This is stated in the engagement letter.
What happens if the CRA reduces the claim? The fee is calculated on what you receive, so it falls with the claim.
How does the retainer on grants work? It is invoiced when the application work starts and credited back against the fee once the grant is approved. Both the retainer and the rate are set out in writing before anything begins.
How should we compare you with another advisor? Compare three things: whether the percentage is applied to the credit claimed or the credit received, whether review support is included or billed separately, and who writes the narrative. A lower percentage that excludes review support is not a lower price, it is a deferred one.
A first call is a conversation about your projects. By the end of it you will know whether the work qualifies, roughly what it is worth, and what preparing it would cost, before anything is signed.
